One of our most recent designs, this has been quite a long time in development by Juliette. Originally she planned a design of a dragon ‘swooshing round’ the fabric, which would appear to be coiled around the wearer, but this evolved into a graphic style close-up of the scales of the dragon. We like the imagery that this creates; with the wearer appearing cloaked in scales, or a strong scaly wing protecting the baby being carried.
Our newest colourway, Silverwing, will be the fifth colourway of this design, though we really love it and can expect many more in future.
While creating this design, Juliette also kept in her mind how it would look on clothing for her other business Oak Wren. Here are a few pictures of Dragon Scales made into adult and kids ponchos and cloaks.
A little history and information about our very first design.
Our very first fabric design was Trowen, designed by Rhys' elder sibling. It takes its inspiration from Celtic knotwork, as a tribute to their family's Celtic heritage but with a modern look and feel to it. It is an original pattern, which some say reminds them of Star Wars' TIE-Fighters, though this is entirely unintentional!
Trowen Emerald, released in September 2013. Our eldest daughter was so small back then, but even now she loves a sling cuddle!
The very first Trowen was Emerald, woven with a green weft on an ecru warp. Since then we've had it woven in over 50 different colourways! The most recent of which is Serendipity (on sale here), which we think is absolutely gorgeous!
Many people love Trowen because it is not only a beautiful pattern, but offers a lot of grip and softness, perfect for getting a good comfortable wrap job around their babies.
Trowen Serendipity - a rich blue weft on a teal to plum warp. Plush weave, 100% combed cotton.
As well as using the design for wraps, ring slings and accessories, we've had blankets made with this design. Juliette has also used this fabric in her other business, Oak Wren, for making stunning ponchos, cloaks and capes.
And finally, I can't resist resharing this photo from my favourite photoshoot ever! Here is Juliette modelling Trowen Ivory (released April 2014) in a medieval style dress on a hauntingly foggy day under a viaduct. I love this picture.
